Doing It Imperfectly Is Better Than Not Doing It At All

This was said on a podcast I was listening to this weekend with Melissa Wood Tepperberg and it rang so true with me as this really is what I’m going through right now. And so I wanted to share it here too.

Last week I was feeling so frustrated. Everything I tried to do got interrupted by the kids or by life in someway. And it got me down a little. I love working out and practicing yoga and prioritising my health but it just wasn’t working. I needed a different approach.

I am not a perfectionist by nature but I am someone who gets stuck in my ways. And now my practices and work outs are very different to how they used to be - or how I want them to be in my head.

How many of us think something along the lines of:

•“I can’t do the workout as I don’t have childcare”

•“There’s no point in doing a morning routine as the kids will be up soon”

•“I can hear the kids in the background so my meditation will be pointless.”

These are stories we are telling ourselves from a point of view of how WE WANT things to be, not how they actually are. And when we fight our reality, we just create more frustration.

And really, we have two choices:

Believe the narrative or change the narrative.

And so why don’t we choose to shift the mindset that our practices don’t need to be perfect? They don’t need to be how they used to be. They can be great in their own way.

So why not make a choice to start:

•Meditating while the kids are watching TV.

•Working out with the kids running around you.

•Doing a yoga class that the kids can get involved in.

•Having a daily routine that gets interrupted most days.

So I am letting go of expectations this week and for the future. Life is messy and chaotic with young kids but we can still take some control back and allow our practices to be imperfectly perfect for the season of life we are in.
