Exercising While Breastfeeding: What You Need to Know

If you’re thinking of returning to fitness after having your baby but are breastfeeding you might be wondering, "Is exercising while breastfeeding safe for me?" The answer is a resounding yes! However, it's essential to tread this path with awareness and care.

Exercising while breastfeeding holds a world of benefits for you, but here are five essential considerations to ensure a safe and rewarding experience as you return to moving your body:

1. Be Aware of Hormonal Changes

Postpartum hormonal fluctuations during breastfeeding, driven by prolactin and oxytocin, can impact your energy levels and overall wellbeing. Prolactin, essential for milk production, may lead to fatigue, while oxytocin, promoting bonding, might induce relaxation or sleepiness. Being aware of these changes is crucial when exercising. Listen to your body's cues during energy fluctuations and emotional changes, opting for gentle exercises or yoga flows that align with your energy levels. Embrace rest and flexibility in your routine, working with your body's needs during this transformative phase of motherhood.

Hormones during breastfeeding can also make us slightly more prone to injury when exercising as they can affect joint laxity and stability. Listening to your body and respecting its limits is crucial in preventing injuries and maintaining a safe and effective exercise routine while breastfeeding.

2. Choose the Right Clothing

Getting yourself some comfortable and supportive activewear, especially a well-fitted sports bra, is a game-changer! Think of it as your perfect companion during workouts. This gear isn't just about style—it's about making sure your breasts feel fully supported and comfy while you exercise. By choosing the right fit, you'll breeze through your workouts without any discomfort, letting you focus on what matters most: your wellness journey.

It also helps to choose clothes you can feed in whether baby is doing a class with you or not, just incase you’re needed for a feed. It saves any rushed changing after class.

3. Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Staying hydrated and nourished is absolutely key, especially when you're breastfeeding and staying active. Make sure to keep yourself well-hydrated before, during, and after your workouts—it's like giving your body a big, refreshing hug. Alongside hydration, fuel your body with snacks that pack a nutritional punch to keep those energy levels up. This combination of proper hydration and nourishment will not only support your exercise routine but also ensure you're feeling your best throughout your day.

4. Listen to Your Body

Listen closely to your body—it's your best guide during exercise. Take note of any signals it sends your way. If you notice any pain, discomfort, or something that just doesn't feel right, it's crucial to hit the pause button and give it the attention it deserves. Don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional if you feel uncertain or if something seems off. Your body has its own way of communicating, so honoring these cues ensures you're taking the best care of yourself while on your wellness journey.

5. Modify to Suit You

Adapt yoga poses and exercises to fit your postpartum body perfectly. Choose gentle movements that nourish and support you, steering clear of anything that might strain or push your limits. This approach is all about honouring your incredible journey through motherhood. By focusing on gentle and supportive exercises, you're not just nurturing your body; you're also celebrating the strength and resilience that come with this remarkable phase of your life.
