Why evening routines are my new morning routine
Back in my pre-kid days I used to love a morning routine…coffee, journalling, reading, yoga, working out.
And then came children!
6am used to feel like an early wake up and now feels it like a lie in! So safe to say, my productive morning routines of the past are no longer a thing. My current morning routine consists of a baby waking me up somewhere around 5am (probably after a broken sleep), making milk, making breakfast, trying to read stories to my kids, attempting to keep them both happy, nappy changing and squeezing a coffee in for myself - I know you know!
The mornings are unpredictable; sometimes they’re smooth and were all in a great mood while other times everyone is tired and not so happy.
I started to accept that the things I used to enjoy doing daily were just a thing of the past and I’d start that again when the kids were bigger.
Until I made evening routines my new thing.
I am lucky that my kids are very good at bedtime and I know come 7pm I have my own time. So I’ve started using this as my time. Here are a few things I do in the evening through the week:
I work out
I journal
I take a bath
I read
I practice yoga
I plan the next day or my week ahead
And it feels good. I feel good.
So rather than spend the evening scrolling through Netflix to pass my time, which I definitely got into a habit of, I am using it to do something for myself and create better habits to make me feel better about myself and help me to thrive in motherhood.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a mum is that you have to do what works for you! Not what works for everyone else. So find a time in the day that works for you to have a routine of self care.
It could be nap time if you have a child who naps on a good schedule, a morning if your baby sleeps well or even at a time when your partner can take over for an hour each day.
Just know it doesn’t have to be a morning routine as the wellness experts tell us. You have a choice to make it work for you.
If prioritising your wellbeing is still important to you as a mum then give it a try and let me know how you get on!
