3 Reasons Why Self Care Isn’t Selfish

Deep down we all know that self care isn’t selfish. In fact it is essential for us to be happy, to thrive, and to have the energy for everything that motherhood demands of us.

But somehow, self care always seems to be at the bottom of your list. Sound familiar?

It’s funny how that happens isn’t it? Becoming a parent, (and a mother in particular from my experience) automatically pushes our needs to the bottom of the list. What we once used to think of as essential is now no longer a consideration when we wake up and get straight into mum-mode. Or if we do consider it, we feel a feeling of guilt arise.

But self care is so important for you. So if you’re finding it challenging to make time for you health and well-being, here are my 3 reasons why SELF CARE ISN’T SELFISH:

1.Everyone will benefit

If we accept that our needs are now at the bottom of our list and don’t consciously make the decision to change that then, ultimately, we will suffer. And guess what? In turn everyone around you will feed off that energy too.

By prioritising yourself and your needs, everyone around you will reap the benefits. You will be happier, your kids will be happier, your partner will be happier.

So if you find it hard to think that you’re doing this for yourself, tell yourself that this is for everyone.

2. You still matter

Yes you! That person you were before this beautiful child took over your life. You are important!

Being a mum is the most important role in my life, but it’s not the only role.

So choose today to start telling yourself that you are important. Your needs are important.

Make a list of all the things that you enjoy doing for you. Write them down or put them in your notes on your phone and make a commitment to choosing one each day.

It could be exercising alone, taking a bath, having a cup of tea in peace, going for a walk, getting your nails done. Whatever feeds your soul, do it!!

3. You’ll inspire your kids

Our kids are learning from us everyday. If you show them that you are important and that taking care of yourself is important, they will learn this from you.

They’ll know as they grow up that taking responsibility for their own health and well-being should be something everyone does.

And isn’t that a great lesson to teach them?

So I hope you feel slightly less guilty about making as much time for yourself as you need in your week.

Make a promise to yourself today to prioritise you and let me know how you get on!

Love Jen xx
