3 reasons to practice yoga as a busy mum

yoga for mums reasons to practice yoga as a new and busy mum

It’s always been important to me to practice yoga and I have always felt the benefits, but never more so than when I became a mum! It’s actually what pushed me to do my yoga teacher training and I always knew I wanted to help other mums to use yoga to help them navigate the challenges of motherhood.

So for my first blog, I thought I would share three reasons why I believe you should practice yoga as a busy mum and hopefully it will inspire you to take up a regular yoga practice too.

1. It brings calm to your body and mind.

The brain fog we can all experience as new and busy mums is no joke! We are often so consumed by the daily tasks, the never-ending to do lists and a baby/toddler who seems to need you 24/7. It’s so easy to keep going and to not take the time to stop and just breathe. But by focusing on deepening and slowing down the breath in yoga, we can help shift the nervous system from the sympathetic nervous system (or the fight-or-flight response) to the parasympathetic nervous system, in turn making us feel calmer and less stressed.

2. It increases strength and flexibility in your body.

A regular practice will support you in building strength and increasing flexibility in your body. Yoga engages various muscle groups including the core, legs, and arms and can give you an all over body workout along with postures that will gently increase flexibility over time. Whether you practiced yoga pre-motherhood or you are completely new to yoga, I believe you will see the benefits if you commit to your practice.

3. It is quiet time for yourself.

Not sure I really need to sell this one to you!! What mum doesn’t want some uninterrupted quiet time in their day? Try to practice in a peaceful, quiet space at home where - hopefully- no one can interrupt you and allow yourself to enjoy the practice, completely guilt-free. Your mind will thank you and I’m sure you’ll leave feeling more energised than you arrived.

If this has inspired you to take up a yoga class then I will hopefully see you in one of my classes soon!
